Depression In Men
Depression in men is a subject that is not talked about much due to the old stigma that men must be strong, but more and more men are experiencing depression everyday.
Research studies have found that depression affects twice as many women as men. However, it also reveals that women and men may talk differently – or in the case of men, not talk – about the symptoms of depression.
Men may not recognize their irritability, sleep problems, loss of interest in work or hobbies, and withdrawal as signs of depression. This may result in fewer men recognizing their depression and asking for the help they need.
Also, men are more likely than women to turn to alcohol or drugs when they are depressed, or become frustrated, discouraged, irritable, angry and sometimes abusive. Some men throw themselves into their work to avoid talking about their depression with family or friends, or engage in reckless, risky behavior.
Because they don't seek treatment, many men die by suicide to to their inability to adequately cope.
The thing that men need to know is that it takes courage to ask for help. And courage is NOT a sign of weakness and their is no stigma for a courageous man!
