Depression Information

This page is a great place to begin if you need depression information or just starting to understand all about depression!

Depression is a serious medical illness; it’s not something that you have made up in your head. It’s more than just feeling "down in the dumps" or "blue" for a few days. It’s feeling "down" and "low" and "hopeless" for weeks at a time.

Depression often co–exists with other illnesses. These illnesses may precede the depression, cause it, and/or be a consequence of it.

The reasons behind why depression and other illnesses are often found together are different for every person and situation. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)has found that depression often co–exists with other illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, hiv/aids, diabetes, and Parkinson's disease.

Their studies have shown that people who have depression in addition to another illness tend to have more severe symptoms of both depression and their illness, more difficulty adapting to their illness, and more medical costs than those who do not have co–existing depression. Research has also shown (as I have found in my practice) that treating the depression can also help improve the outcome of treating the illness.
